Sketches of the 20th Century (F. D'Andrea)
“Sketches of the 20th Century” is the new cd by the by jazz pianist Franco D’Andrea, recorded in Parco della Musica in Rome, a project in which I have been immersed for about a year and a half writing the music.
The process was as follows: Franco sent me recordings freely improvising on specific intervalic regions (this is what he calls them) composed, in most cases, of two intervals (sometimes even one) with their respective inversions. From those recordings I extracted very specific and brief ideas, a small phrase, a groove, a rhythmic motif of three or four notes… and from there I developed the composition, creating textures, atmospheres or melodies that serve as both a background and inspiration for the development of D’Andrea’s interaction with the soloists and with the orchestra.
I tried to give both D’Andrea and the soloists as much freedom as possible so that they could express themselves without limitations or restrictions and with total freedom. The annotations in the jazz trio consisted mainly of small indications regarding the form and intervallic regions on which a certain orchestral fragment was based.
